Veteran's Day at West Jefferson High School was awesome. The high school leadership team served lunch to the veterans and were able to sit and visit with them and learn more about their stories. The high school sang the national anthem, followed by the first and third graders singing a beautiful song about heroes. Then we were lucky enough to hear from our veterans. Lester Reiss, the commander of the local Verle Skidmore Post, led the assembly. He asked Libby Sarbaum and Ted Goodier to speak to the high school students. We appreciate the service and sacrifice of these men and women

Our local VFW recently awarded their 2023 Elementary Educator of the Year Award to Jalena Dixon. Mrs. Dixon has worked in the West Jefferson School District as a Special Education Teacher for 8 years. She has been the District Special Ed. Coordinator for 4 years. Among her many duties, she is responsible for organizing the schedules of all of our Paraprofessionals. Our elementary principal, Kyle Johnson, nominated Mrs. Dixon by writing an essay that he submitted to the VFW. He read this essay during the West Jefferson Veteran's Day Assembly. Mrs. Dixon was awarded a certificate, a bouquet of flowers, and a cash prize. The essay will now move to the district level. We appreciate Mrs. Dixon and the work that she does within our schools to help our students.

Board of Trustees Member, Willy Schmitt, has served on our School Board for 10 years and decided not to run again in the November 7th Election. No one submitted the required paperwork to run in Zone 2 before the election deadline, therefore that zone is left with a vacancy beginning in January. If anyone who resides in Zone 2 would like to serve on the West Jefferson Board of Trustees, please submit a letter of intent to the school board stating your desire to serve on the board. Letters can be emailed to Board Clerk, Carrie DeGraw, (degrawc@wjsd.org) or mailed to the West Jefferson School District Office; 1256 E 1500 N; Terreton, ID 83450. There have been some changes in the rules for school basketball. We just wanted to make our Panther fans aware of this before you wonder what in the world is going on when you are watching a ballgame. Beginning the 2023-24 season, basketball teams will shoot two free throws for common fouls when in the “bonus.” Teams will reach the bonus when their opponent commits five team fouls in each quarter. Team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter. This change to Rule 4-8-1 eliminates the one-and-one scenario and sets new foul limits each quarter for awarding the bonus free throw. Shot clocks are also in effect for high school basketball this season. To read more about the rules of the high school shot clock, click here: https://5il.co/291zs
