Softball Senior Night - Fri. Apr. 28 @ 1:00pm

Mr. Bird's family is having a retirement party for him and asked that we share this information for them.
Please send any memories or messages to Mrs. Bird at birdc@wjsd.org.

Recently, our students were given the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work not only in the classroom, but in the community as well! National Honor Society(NHS) currently has 30 students who have pledged themselves to one or more of the pillars of NHS: Character, Leadership, Service and Scholarship. The NHS has been involved in outstanding acts of service and we should all take a little time to congratulate these fine students on their achievements! The group of students are advised by Mr. Gore and Mr. Packer. A few of this years NHS activities are listed below:
The National Honor Society organized and ran a Blood Drive on 03/28/2023 and were able to get 30 units of blood.
The NHS also raised over $2,000 for Adopt a Kid for Christmas program where students raised money then bought presents, and delivered presents to needy families.
The National Honor Society in the past has cleaned up litter from the streets, gotten winter clothes for needy families, tutored students who were in need of academic help, and helped in humanitarian efforts.

There have been several changes this week on our Athletic Schedule. Please note that this is the most current information and we will try to post any changes if they happen.

Come show some support for these young men aspiring to be the next MR. West Jeff! Tickets can be purchased in advance from any of the participants.

Congratulations are in order for our FFA club! These wonderful students competed with exemplary showmanship and represented West Jefferson High School well, bringing home numerous awards! This group of individuals are the last to be advised by Mr. Bird, as he is retiring at the end of this school year. We are sad to see him go, but know that he leaves behind a great legacy and big shoes to fill! Congratulations again FFA students!!!

Officer Mike Miller has taught the D.A.R.E. Program for over 20 years in our school district. For this year's class, Officer Miller brought in Porter Ellett to speak to the 5th-8th grade students at an assembly in the Panther Den. Porter is a coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. He spoke to the students about Five Lessons:
Think Outside the Box
Be Humble
Sacrifice
Don't Quit
Be a Leader
After each lesson, he gave examples in his own life of how he was able to apply these principles on his journey to where he is now. One example he used is how he had to "think outside the box" when learning to tie his shoes.
Porter was 4 years old when he lost the use of his right arm in an accident. At 10 years old, he still hadn't learned how to tie his shoes because it was easier to just ask someone else to do it for him. His Mom told him that if he learned to tie his shoes, she would buy him a new pair of Nike Jordan shoes. He struggled and struggled to tie his shoes with his one functioning hand, but he was determined. Porter and his Mom had to think outside the box to figure out how he could accomplish this task. They found a way that worked and he got his new pair of Jordans! Porter asked a few students to come forward and try to tie their shoes with one hand. After trying for a few minutes, he showed them his trick; first tie the knot and then hold one side of the laces under his shoe while he pulled it tight. He encouraged the students to think of different ways to achieve success in their lives. He then went on to talk about four other life lessons.
When Porter was finished talking, he signed autographs and let the students see his AFC Championship Ring and his first Superbowl Ring. He let them pick them up, wear them, and take photos. He will receive this year's Superbowl Ring soon.
If you would like to learn more about him, watch Porter Ellet's Story on YouTube.
Thank you Officer Miller and Coach Ellett!
